A Gentleman in Moscow is one of the impressing novels that I have ever come across. Various readers of the same novel claim that they were inspired to read it more than once. It was meant to inspire the readers to press on in life regardless of the challenges that they are going through. In the novel, Count did not give up while he was under house arrest. In fact, he made many friends and led a purposeful life there, hence the title 'A Gentleman in Moscow'.

What is A Gentleman in Moscow all about?

A Gentleman in Moscow is written by Amor Towles, and it tells the story of Count Alexander Rostov, who is a Russian aristocrat. Count was sentenced to a house arrest for being associated with a poem which had revolutionary overtones even though he was not the one who composed it. Even though Count was imprisoned during the onset of Communism; he could see the changes in the government operations that reflected the hotels' operations. Anyone might be quick to think that Count had an unfulfilling life while in the Metropol Hotel. On the contrary, his life in bondage was quite rich and purposeful.

The novel starts with Alexander being taken to the Metropol after being sentenced to house arrest. It was after this when he decided to kill himself by jumping off the roof of the building in which he was imprisoned. The suicidal idea was changed by the hotel's handyman, Abram, who shared with him about the honey that the bees that he kept on the roof had made. He told him that the honey had a taste of apples from Nizhny Novgorod, which is a place in Russia where they both grew up.

After this occasion, Count changed his thoughts and befriended the employees in the hotel such as Marina, the hotel's seamstress who taught him to sew, and Anna, the famous actress in Russia. One of his friends in the hotel, Nina, brought her daughter Sofia to him after being sent by the Russian regime to accomplish some hard labor in Sevvostlag following the arrest of her husband.

Sofia never came back to the hotel, nor did she communicate with Count even though she had promised to come back for her daughter after finding a good job and a better place to live. Sofia grew up well under the care of Count and became a talented pianist. When she was 17 years old, she was lucky to be invited to participate in a goodwill concert, which was to take place in Paris. Later on, the man who composed the controversial poem died, and Count escaped from the hotel.

Zvenigorod is a historical town, 60 km east of Moscow. It takes about an hour by car, depending on the traffic, so it’s perfect for a day trip to escape the capital.
The small, almost 1000-year-old, town located on the river Moskva has quite a few things to offer for its visitors.
The Monastery “Savvino Storozhevskiy”, which is just a 5 min drive from the center of Zvenigorod, is definitely worth a visit. It is surrounded by beautiful nature on a hill, so don’t forget to enjoy the view from outside the monastery walls. But also inside it's really beautiful and peaceful. It reminded us a lot of Sergey Possad, but “Savvino Storozhevskiy” is smaller and less touristy. If you want to visit the churches inside, don’t forget to bring a scarf to cover your head inside the church (women only). The parking and entrance are free.
For those who would like to walk a bit more, we recommend to drive 3 min further through the forest to “Tserkov Nikolaya”. Here you will find on another parking lot, from where you walk to a spring and the two churches.

For lunch or a coffee break, we recommend a visit to the street “Kupchy Dvor”. This tiny street has a great atmosphere. All the shops, cafés and restaurants are in old nice wooden houses and they created really beautiful outdoor spaces on the street.
From here, it‘s a nice walk towards the river to see the old wooden houses. Also the museum “Back to the USSR” is worth a visit, if you still have time. But don’t forget to check the opening hours before you go there.
We hope we have inspired you with some nice tips for the weekend!
